Is Halo Good of Bad?

22 06 2007

My mom works for the interactive multimedia program at The Collage of New Jersey. That pretty much means she teaches game design, and having a mom who’s into video games can have its ups and downs. One of the ups is that you can talk to her about the things, and even play them with her (sometimes). The down side? She knows things. So, of coerce, when I asked for “Halo” for the P.C, a lengthy discussion ensued, as we debated the ups and downs of the game. Mom won, but being my legal guardian, I don’t think she could have lost. Mom’s argument was that “Halo” was senselessly violent, and had no real value. I said that this wasn’t true. Halo has a rich and intriguing story line, which several books have been based off. The fact that this story line involves a lot of senseless killing is beside the point. Another one of her arguments was the fact that Halo had nothing new to offer, and was just a normal first person shooter. But if this was the case, why was Halo so popular? I’m glad she didn’t press me on this, because not having the game, I didn’t know the answer. In the end, she won the argument, but I’m still not settled. Halo does have value! For example, the online play feature allows people to practice working together to accomplish something. Ok, I’m sorry, that’s not true. Seventy percent of those people are jerks and poor losers. Anyone who knows what “tea bagging” is can tell you that. But there is one augment that no one, except my mom, can deny. Halo is fun. Incredibly, ridiculously, fun. No one can tell you why, but if you play it for more than five minutes, you’ll know its true. You will buy it, and it will eventually consume your life. But oh man, will it by worth it.
So master chief, how does that make you feel?
